Unless you’re a dedicated snow camper, there’s a good chance you and your RV have been cooped up the last few months. With the frosts behind us, it’s time for spring maintenance and RV travel preparation with a clean slate.
The friendly folks at KOA provide a thorough list of instructions for spring RV maintenance. In summary:
Batteries: Recharge and add distilled water according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Your battery probably lost a good amount of charge while in storage!
Water: De-winterize the water system and flush any antifreeze or bleach out thoroughly. Get spring started with some fresh filters, too.
Fuel Sources: Fill up and test your propane tank and any other fuel reserves.
Tires: Pump up to optimal air pressure and make sure your spare tire is in good condition.
Vehicle Tune-Up: Get ready to drive! Your motorhome or towing vehicle should get a complete tune-up.
Seams: Weather stripping, sealants, and other enclosures may have cracked or become loose after sitting unused during a series of temperature changes. Check all openings and seams and tighten everything up.
More Tips for Spring RV Travel Preparation
If it’s been a while since your RV took a tour, that means it’s also been a while since you went camping! Time to get back in the swing of things.
As part of your RV travel preparation, make sure you’re set on energy sources, emergency supplies, and basic amenities. Take a trip to your favorite wholesaler or big box store and stock up on cleaning supplies and personal items. Also make sure you have a working fire extinguisher and a good first-aid kit.
When you’re ready, take the RV out for a little spin to get comfortable behind the wheel if you might be a little rusty.
Happy travels this spring. Get the RV accessories you still need, see a mechanic for the difficult maintenance stuff, and get excited about camping!
