The future looks bright for the RV industry. After five consecutive years of steady sales growth, RV shipments hit a four-year high last year; and 2014 is expected to continue the industry’s upward trend. That’s good news for RV dealers and RV owners looking to sell their RVs on and upgrade to newer, more luxurious models. The continued uptick in RV shipments indicates a growing market for new and used RVs.

Surpassing the industry’s fourth-quarter forecast, RV wholesale shipments reached 321,127 units last year, an impressive 12.4% increase over the 285,749 units shipped in 2012 and nearly twice the165,700 units shipped in 2009 during the dark days of the recession. In 2013, the continued strengthening of the industry was led by shipment of 282,795 units of perennially popular towable RVs, a 9.8% increase over 2012. However, despite towables’ impressive numbers, last year’s greatest growth was seen in motorhome shipments which increased a whopping 35.9% in a single year. Driven by buyer demand for roomier, more luxurious, more home-like RVs, motorhome shipments totaled 38,332 units in 2013, 10,000 more than in 2012.

“The robust growth seen in the RV market in 2013 is due to a combination of the strong affinity consumers have for RV travel and ownership coupled with strengthening economic conditions that have seen rising home and stock values, the improved availability of credit and continued gains in job and incomes boost consumer confidence,” RVIA President Richard Coon said in the Winter 2014 edition of RVIA Today, the newsletter of the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association.

Not surprisingly, the most popular months to purchase an RV were April, May and June at the start of the summer RV season. According to RVIA 2013 shipment statistics, RV shipments also spike in October, perhaps reflecting interest in the RV lifestyle by snowbirds and retirees preparing to head south for the winter. As shown by the continuing upward trend of RV shipments, more people than ever before are embracing the healthy, outdoor RV lifestyle. We are looking forward to another bright year for the RV industry at 🙂
