RVing families enjoy the extra day to relax and explore during the Memorial Day weekend. It can be easy to forget that Memorial Day is much more than an opportunity to RV camp, toss some dogs on the grill and explore with the family. Why not slip a little history lesson into your family fun.
Memorial Day is the day when our nation remembers and honors the men and women who have died serving our country. Its origin dates to the Civil War during which people regularly decorated the graves of soldiers killed during that conflict.
Many communities held special ceremonies honoring their Civil War dead, but there was no national observance until 1868 when Army commander General John Logan proclaimed May 30 a national day of mourning. Celebrated near the date of reunification after the Civil War, the day was named Decoration Day for the practice of decorating soldiers’ graves. On that first Decoration Day, flowers were laid on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
With World War I, Decoration Day became a day to commemorate all U.S. soldiers who died serving their country. It was renamed Memorial Day by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1967.
Take a moment today to remember those who have served America. Visit a Civil War battlefield or stop by a cemetery to pay your respects.
To all the men and women who have served our country and those who continue to serve, the RVT.com staff would like to say, “Thank you.”

Now is the time to begin booking your vacation in Denali, Alaska. Touted as one of the must-sees of Alaska, this national park is full of wildlife with grizzlies, wolves, caribou and moose just to name a few of the majestic beasts that roam this pristine wilderness.
The park allows limited amounts of visitors at a time, so you definitely need to start looking into things now. The park website recommends booking at least six months prior to your anticipated visit.
Bear in mind as you make your plans that only certain campgrounds in Denali cater to large RV’s. Make sure your reservations are for an appropriate site that is suitable for your RV.
Another point to be aware of is that you can’t bring any vehicles deep into the interior of the park. After settling into one the lovely campgrounds, you will need to rely on the park’s own “green bus” services to bring you deeper in. The park offers daily shuttles that go over 90 miles into the park over mostly-gravel road. You will be traveling through boreal forests and sub-arctic tundra with rolling mountainsides and sheer cliffs, providing scenic views and excellent wildlife viewing areas. There are numerous other options as well which will allow you to park your RV at one of the sites and then set out on foot or bike for the interior of the park.
While you are planning your trip, it wouldn’t hurt to start praying that you get a good view of the beautiful Mt. McKinley, which is frequently covered by clouds.

Quite a few RVers plan to hit the highway today, getting a one-week jump on anticipated Memorial Day crowds. The unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day is one of America’s busiest travel and camping weekends. Despite the traditional bump in gas prices, 32.1 million Americans are expected to start traveling today and through the end of next weekend. According to a recent AAA survey, that’s 2 million more travelers than last year, an encouraging sign for our still struggling economy. Americans are still keeping a tight rein on expenses, however; and the bulk of Memorial Day travelers will be traveling by car or RV. RV travel continues to be the most economic way to vacation, considerably undercutting the cost of plane/hotel travel.
With the start of the summer travel season nearly here, traffic on RVT.com is reaching fever pitch as families tune into the economic advantages of RV travel. From inexpensive folding trailers (pop up campers) and truck campers to spacious travel trailers and motorhomes, RVT.com online classified ads offer thousands of new and used RVs for sale at very affordable prices. Motivated RV buyers are flocking to RVT everyday to scope out the online RV ads and cut their own deals with RV sellers. Americans tired of staycations are buying new and used RVs online at RVT and hitting the road for summer fun! Isn’t it time you joined them?

Avoid the crowds this summer and head your RV down the road less traveled. Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Grand Canyon, while the most traveled, aren’t the only national parks filled with incredible vistas and amazing wildlife. America is home to 58 national parks, each capturing a unique taste of our country’s natural beauty.
For a taste of something different, RV owners should try one of these less traveled national park sites:
Hot Springs, Arkansas. The smallest national park at just 5,549 acres, Hot Springs boasts 47 thermal springs bubbling with 143-degree water. Indulge in a soothing soak or steam at restored 1920′s Fordyce Bathhouse.
Acadia, Maine. Watch bald eagles soar over the pink granite cliffs of the rugged Maine coastline. Sandy beaches and small rocky islands are home to 300 bird species including our national icon.
Big Bend, Texas. A stargazer’s delight, Big Bend boasts the darkest skies and most incredible view of the stars. Here the Milky Way shines so brightly it creates shadows!
Badlands, South Dakota. Like nature’s biggest whack-a-mole game, thousands of prairie dogs pop their heads in and out of the ground at the 1,000-acre Badlands prairie dog town. Wildlife is abundant in the ethereal Badlands. Watch for buffalo, black-footed ferrets and pronghorn.
Everglades, Florida. Keep your eyes peeled for gators as you hike, canoe or kayak through the Everglades’ lush swampy jungle. The last of the dinosaurs, alligators date back 65 million years and can grow to 65 feet. Beware of floating logs with eyes!

With folks over 80 being the fastest growing population segment, the reality is that more families will be caring for an elderly parent or relative in the near future. Many seniors prefer staying at home or living with a family member to moving into a nursing home, but most homes are not designed to accommodate people with mobility problems and chronic health issues. A savvy Virginia design firm, N2Care, has come up with a unique solution that many families are finding not only practical but affordable. They are customizing park model RVs into caretaking cottages.
The 12 x 24-foot RV park models are designed to house people with disabilities and can be tied into a home’s security and communication systems to allow 24-hour real time remote computer monitoring to ensure gram or gramp’s safety. The park model RVs comply with local zoning ordinances and are designed to tie into a home’s water, electric and sewer service. Units can be leased short or long-term and be conveniently located on a homeowner’s property.
The new Med-Cottage park model RVs are an innovative way to allow aging grandparents their own living space and independence for as long as possible. The new senior living arrangement not only keeps grandparents close so they can enjoy family activities, but also ensures that when your parents’ need help, you’re there to give it.

Are you tired of paying homage to the slow economy? Are you frustrated with telling your family “we can’t” when they ask about taking a vacation this summer? Do you really want to spend your summer weekends trimming shrubs and touching up the trim? You don’t have to. Buy an RV on RVT.com and you and your family can embark on a new adventure every weekend!
In multiple studies, RV vacations have proved to be cheaper than any other type of family vacation:
Lodging. Many RV campgrounds and resorts offer all the amenities of quality hotels (except maid service) at a tiny fraction of the price — and you always get a premium view! Save more by camping at national and state parks which offer bargain rates for RV campsites. You can even camp free in many Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club parking lots on the way to your ultimate destination.
Meals. Food is one of the most expensive items in a vacation budget. When you RV you carry your kitchen with you. Stock up on everyone’s favorite foods and eat healthy. Plus, you won’t waste money on expensive restaurant food the kids won’t eat.
Travel. RV travel is delightfully comfortable and convenient. No rushing to meet airline schedules, no suitcases to lug and no standing in long scanner lines. RVs keep everything at your fingertips and give kids plenty of room to spread out and move around.
Best of all, your one-time investment in buying an RV will provide years of vacationing pleasure.
