RV Battery Maintenance Tips to Get You on the Road Safely

Posted by Ashley Gannon on Mar 29, 2010

When spring comes, RV owners are anxious to power up and hit the road. Spring break is often the first major RV trip of the season. If your RV has been sitting in storage over the winter, you’ll need to completely charge the batteries before you head out on the highway. Before you do that, complete these routine maintenance procedures suggested by Interstate Batteries:

> Charging should not be performed at extreme high (+120 degrees F.) or low temperatures. Extreme cold will slow charging and reduce battery capacity. Extreme heat is more dangerous and can cause overcharging and even explosion or fire.

> Make sure the cables are intact and that connectors are tight. Use insulated tools to prevent shorting the terminals.

> Make sure vent caps are correctly installed and tight.

> Batteries should be clean of dirt and corrosion. If necessary, remove corrosion with a wire brush and wash away dirt with a 50/50  solution of baking soda and water.

> In non-sealed batteries, if plates are exposed, replenish with distilled water so plates are covered 1/8 inch. If plates are not exposed, replenishing should be performed after charging.

> Battery charger used should be correctly matched to battery being charged and have capacity to fully charge the battery within 8 hours.

>After charging, replenish water and check acid levels. Acid level should be 1/4 inch below bottom of cell cover fill well.

To keep your new or used RV ready to roll, check batteries once a month.

Gas RV or Diesel RV? What You Should Know About Diesels

Posted by Ashley Gannon on Mar 26, 2010

When you shop for a new or used RV online, one of the first choices you must make is gas or diesel. Each fuel type has its advantages and disadvantages, but modern technological advances have leveled the playing field. Because most automobiles run on gasoline, RV buyers are generally familiar with gas engines. Gas RVs work pretty much like supersized cars. Diesel engines, on the other hand, work a bit differently, and most RV buyers have some misconceptions about diesel engines.

Smelly, dirty, noisy diesels are a thing of the past. Engine improvements and new technology to remove exhaust pollutants mean that today’s diesel RVs are able to meet the same EPA standards as gas RVs. Diesel RVs produce significantly less CO2 than gas RVs; but because diesel fuel contains more carbon than gasoline, diesel engines emit 17% more greenhouse gases per gallon of burned fuel than gas engines. Ecologically, it could be a toss up because diesels burn less fuel per mile than gas RVs resulting in better fuel economy.

Many RV buyers choose diesel RVs because of the better fuel economy, though, because diesel fuel is more expensive to produce than gasoline, you will pay a little more at the pump. Another advantage of diesel engines is that they have no electrical ignition parts to wear out which means reduced maintenance and no tune up expense.

Whichever type of RV you decide to buy, you’ll find a huge selection of both gas and diesel RVs on RVT.com.

RV Vacation Destinations Offer Family Fun

Posted by Ashley Gannon on Mar 24, 2010

If you and your family are avid RV travelers, it’s always fun to explore a new place. For spring break or a summer trek, try one of these five RV vacation destinations. All are family-friendly, offering plenty of inexpensive activities the whole family can enjoy.

Myrtle Beach, SC. Family friendly and inexpensive, this charming summer hot spot has plenty to keep the kids busy. Along the boardwalk you’ll find plenty of fun including miniature golf, biking, street performers, face painters, free concerts, fireworks, funnel cakes, rides and, of course, the beach. Take a free walking tour of nearby Murrells Inlet Marsh for a quiet afternoon.

San Antonio, TX. History mixes with fun when you visit the Alamo in this culture-rich city. Enjoy a stroll along downtown’s River Walk or take a water taxi ride at sunset to enjoy recently added art installations.

Taos, NM. A cozy arty mecca nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos offers gorgeous views, funky art, inviting galleries, winter skiing and tubing and summer hiking and horseback riding.

Sedona, AZ. Bike, horseback ride or hike through colorful red rock canyons. Take a Pink Jeep tour to learn about American Indian history and the area’s interesting geology. In town, wine shops and ice cream shops rub shoulders.

Hershey Park, PA. Make sure you sample the chocolate when you tour the Hershey factory. A theme park offers more than 60 rides and attractions. Pennsylvania Dutch country is nearby if you’re looking for a vacation with a slower pace.

Fun Activities for Family RV Trips

Posted by Ashley Gannon on Mar 22, 2010

On the first day of Spring Break, which for many school children and their families begins this week or next, families across the U.S. will be packing up their RVs for their inaugural RV trip of the year. Memorial Day may be considered the start of the RV summer season, but lots of families who are tied to school schedules and activities get a jump on the RV season with a Spring Break trip.

RVing is a great way to unplug from life’s distractions and tune into your family. In our March 15 post, we shared some ideas on how to pack some extra fun into RVing with your kids. Today, we’ll share a few more ideas that are sure to become family favorites.

-  Breakfast Sundaes. Sure to become as big a hit as Dad’s Mickey Mouse pancakes, breakfast sundaes let each family member style their own healthy treat. Set up a buffet of fresh or canned sliced fruit, granola, yogurt, nuts and don’t forget the whipped cream, cherries and sprinkles. Hand everyone a parfait glass (elegant) or a cereal bowl (quick) and let each person create his own breakfast sundae.

- ‘What’s’ for Dinner. Pass out slips of paper or index cards to each family member. On each one write a “what” question: What’s your favorite movie? If you could have a super power, what would it be? Mix up the questions in a bowl and pass them around at dinner. Take turns picking and let everyone answer.

RVT Smokes Online RV Ad Competition

Posted by Ashley Gannon on Mar 19, 2010

In a comparison of monthly unique site visitors, RVT.com maintained its status as a North American leader in online RV classified advertising. While two of its main competitors posted losses last month, RVT lengthened its lead over other online RV ad websites by posting at 13% gain in unique visitors. Both RV Trade Online and RV USA showed losses in website viewers with RV Trade Online posting a significant 6% loss in unique website visitors.

Other RV online ad competitors RV Trader and RV Search, while holding steady, drew fewer than half the number of unique visitors as RVT.com. RV Search was viewed by just 64,981 unique visitors; RV Trader, by only 42,429 unique visitors.  RVT.com proved its competitive advantage with viewings by 126,221 unique visitors and that didn’t include the 30,000 additional unique visitors who visited our sister sites RVtowables.com and RVmotorized.com.

A unique visitor is an individual who views a website. Unique indicates that each visitor is counted only once, even if he makes multiple visits to the site. In advertising, a greater number of unique visitors coming to a website means more individual people are viewing the online RV ads posted on the site. For RV sellers, both owners and dealers, this means that when you advertise your RV on RVT.com your online RV ad is seen a greater number of potential RV buyers.

How to Choose the Perfect RV for You

Posted by Ashley Gannon on Mar 17, 2010

With so many different RV types and models to choose from, how do you choose the perfect RV for you and your family? Here are some basic questions to get you started:

1. How will you be using your RV? Do you plan to live in your RV full-time, take the family on a summer-long cross-country trip, use it only for weekend travel or occasional fishing trips? If you plan to spend a lot of time in your RV, you might want a model that offers greater space and more amenities. If you’re just planning weekend camping or fishing trips, a folding camping trailer may fit your needs.

2. Do you want an all-in-one motorhome or a towable RV? Towables allow you to park and use the tow vehicle to get around when you reach your destination. Motorhomes, particularly bus-sized Class A models, require more maneuvering and parking space but give you more living area. And you can always tow a get-around car behind your RV.

3. How many people will usually be traveling with you? If you have a large family or plan to do most of your RV traveling with friends, you’ll want to choose an RV with enough sleeping berths to accommodate the whole crowd comfortably. Consider buying an RV with one or more slide outs to give you extra interior space.

Pack Extra Fun into RV Weekend with Kids

Posted by Ashley Gannon on Mar 15, 2010

Unplugging your kids — and yourselves — from the electronic devices that command so much of their  — and your — attention to spend the occasional weekend focusing on each other is a great way to build family togetherness. It’s that chance to build and strengthen family ties that leads many families to purchase their first RV. And it’s the fun families have together while traveling in their RV that makes them die-hard members of the RV Nation.

Spicing up your family RV weekends with a few special treats and activities will build memories and create fun family traditions that you and your kids will look forward to every time you head out in your RV. Try these ideas adapted from FamilyFun magazine.

- Prop Charades. Use objects found in your RV — a paper towel tube, pillow, cereal box, fork, etc. — as props for family charades. Players must use the prop to act out their clue while others guess. A paper towel tube might be a pirate’s spyglass or Statue of Liberty torch.

- Tiny Treasure Hunt. To make hiking more fun, give each person a small bag to fill with things they find along the way. Create a list of things to hunt for or go freestyle and compare treasures when you get back to your RV. Ideas: acorn top, funny shaped stick, colored leaf, interesting stone, etc. You can also take a big bag and pick up litter during your hike to protect the outdoors.

More ideas next time.
