Price Negotiation Tips for RV Sellers & Buyers

When selling their motorhome or travel trailer, RV sellers hope to get top dollar and recoup as much of their investment as possible. RV buyers, on the other hand, are looking for bargains, hoping to buy a great RV for as little as possible. The reality is that both RV sellers and buyers will have to compromise on price if they are to find an acceptable middle ground and close the deal. If both parties are realistic when negotiating price, neither should find the compromise too onerous.

Although RV sellers and buyers come at price from opposite directions, they both use the same tools to determine how much they’re willing to compromise when negotiating the sale/purchase price of a motorhome, travel trailer, 5-wheel or truck camper.

  1. Start with the NADA RV Guide to determine the RV’s book value. Trusted by sellers, buyers and dealers across the country, the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) publishes pricing and specification guides on thousands of new and used vehicles, including RVs. In computing the book value for each RV make, model and year, NADA takes into account the vehicle’s original price, depreciation, market demand, availability and maintenance record. It’s important to remember that book values are average figures and should be considered a starting point. A specific RV’s condition, mileage and optional equipment can significantly impact its price.
  2. Next, see what the competition is charging. Because the mere fact of ownership makes things seem more valuable, many RV sellers tend to overvalue their RVs. If you want to make the sale, you’ll need to take off those rose-colored glasses and be realistic. Set your price slightly higher than your firm price to attract more buyers and give yourself a little wiggle room during sales negotiations. Buyers should likewise make their first bid slightly lower than their top price so they too have room to negotiate. If both parties are committed to a fair sale, they’ll be able to come to terms and seal the deal.
