July 24-26, Gilroy Garlic Festival. It’s all about the food when Gilroy, California hosts this annual celebration of the flavorful, stinky bulb. Celebrity chefs, cook-offs, cooking demonstrations and tons of pasta, calamari, scampi and other goodies fill the air with heavenly scents. Nosh away to lots of great musical entertainment. July 29-Aug. 2, Appalachian String Band Music Festival. On a mountaintop in Clifftop, West Virginia, folks from around the world gather to pluck banjoes, fiddle, dance and sing in a toe-tapping celebration of Appalachian music. Learn to square dance or flatfoot. Try your hand at basket weaving. Enjoy family activities, demonstrations, master classes, competitions and concerts. Aug. 28-29, Potato Days. Come for the wacky fun and wonderful food as the town of Barnesville, Minnesota celebrates its spud-producing heritage. Mashed potato wrestling, mashed potato sculpting, potato car races, barrel rides, a potato picking contest and potato sack fashion show are just part of the old-fashioned fun. October 2-4, National Storytelling Festival. Tall tales delight all ages when the world’s best storytellers come to Jonesborough, Tennessee each fall. Regional yarns, ghost stories, tall tales, native stories and more are shared under the tents as storytellers from around the world spin their marvelous tales.

October 3-11, Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. New Mexico’s skies glow with color each fall as hundreds of hot air balloons lift off, creating a magical aerial landscape of dancing shapes.
