I am highly motivated to sell this rig because I need the money for a new project, and I want to restore a 1998 Dodge Ram Short Bed 4x4 with a 12-valve Cummins and a 5-speed manual transmission. This rig was custom built for the current owner by Doug Tolbert at Powerhouse Coach. It is especially designed for rugged use by a large family or two who love lots of outdoor activity. It is designed to tow a trailer full of motorcycles, kayaks, or four-wheelers, and house and feed a crowd at the end of a hard day's play. The Custom Off-Road is made for highest possible efficiency on the highways (where you spend 99.9% of your time), but with four-wheel drive, supersingle tires for extra traction, and 4 extra inches of ground clearance on demand, it's able to travel those dirt roads the last few miles into the wilderness.
Because it was made for active people, the interior is designed for rugged use and easy cleaning. A quick sweep of the floor and you’re good to go. (The sleeper area of the cab is carpeted, which helps with thermal and sonic insulation).
It features a rock-solid, very strong Cummins ISX 475 hp with a 12-speed overdrive Freedom Line transmission. This is the top-of-the-line Volvo transmission that is a clutchless autoshifter, so you don't have to press a clutch, but you don't lose power to a torque-converter in an automatic. PLUS, IT USES SMART SKIP-SHIFTING TECHNOLOGY, which means it will sense the load and automatically skip 1, 2, or even more gears to give you the most efficient drive.
One of the really nice features of this rig is the fact that it’s a pre-2005 model. That’s important because 2005 was the start of some new EPA regs that made the newer diesel engines more complex, more finicky about their fuel, less efficient, and more expensive to maintain. With this engine you can burn the old dirty fuel if it’s all you can find, and it runs just fine. For example, you could take it on a South American tour and have no problem burning the fuel down there. This gives you a lot more flexibility and confidence.
While the Custom Off-Road makes for great outdoor adventures in great comfort, it also provides a top-notch Bugout option in a doomsday scenario. If you have to evacuate because of an oncoming hurricane, for example, the dual 125-gallon fuel tanks give you a measured 1900-mile range! Locking steel bays, tons of interior storage, plenty of sleeping room, and a hidden interior gun safe give you Bugout transportation for 10 people no problem, and even more in a pinch. Since you have the off-road package, your wilderness bugout options are wide open. With a smart food stock and a decent rain catch system or a natural water supply, you could literally hunker down for months, and the only thing you’d miss is the hustle and bustle of your old desk job.
The base price of a Powerhouse Coach Custom is $189,000, and with options including the Off-Road capability, this particular unit comes out at over $245,000. But we’re offering it for only $199,000, and with well under 8000 miles since conversion.
